A small bedroom does not mean small storage. It means smarter storage. The difference between a cramped room that feels cluttered and a compact room that feels calm is almost always the wardrobe — how well it uses the available space, how cleverly the interior is planned, and whether it was designed for your room or just squeezed into it.
At Fox Wardrobes, we specialise in making the most of tight spaces. Box rooms, children’s bedrooms, guest rooms, single bedrooms in converted houses — we have been fitting wardrobes into Kent’s most challenging spaces for 23 years, and the more awkward the room, the more we enjoy the challenge.
Off-the-shelf wardrobes are designed for average rooms. If your bedroom is smaller than average — and in many Kent homes, particularly Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, and modern new-builds, at least one bedroom is — a standard wardrobe either does not fit at all or wastes the space it does occupy.
A freestanding wardrobe sits in your room with gaps on every side and dead space above it. A bespoke fitted wardrobe uses the full height, fills the full width, and can be built at a reduced depth to give you those extra centimetres of floor space that make the room feel noticeably more open. The key is working with people who have the knowledge and experience to get the design right — because in a small room, every decision shows.
Over 23 years and thousands of projects, we have developed a toolkit of solutions for small bedrooms.
an upper rail and a lower rail double your short-hanging capacity without needing any extra width or depth.
for the top section of a full-height wardrobe. Pull the rail down to your level, hang or remove clothes, and push it back up. Turns dead space into usable storage.
sliding doors do not swing out into the room, so you do not need clearance space in front of the wardrobe. In a small bedroom, this can be the difference between the wardrobe working and not working at all.
build your drawers into the wardrobe and you eliminate a separate piece of furniture from the room. More floor space, less clutter.
the section above the doors, often wasted in freestanding wardrobes, becomes a dedicated area for suitcases, seasonal items or spare bedding.

We have fitted wardrobes into very compact box rooms where every centimetre was planned carefully. It is surprising how much storage you can create when the wardrobe is designed specifically for the room by people with the right experience. The smaller the room, the more important it is to work with a company that has done this thousands of times before.
Usually yes. Hinged doors need clearance space in front of the wardrobe to swing open. In a small bedroom, that clearance space might clash with the bed, a bedside table, or the bedroom door. Sliding doors sit within the wardrobe frame and take up no floor space at all.
Yes. We design around radiators, sockets, light switches and other fixed obstacles. A common solution is to leave a ventilated section at the base of the wardrobe where the radiator sits, with full wardrobe storage above.
Mirror sliding doors are the single most effective way to make a small bedroom feel larger. They reflect light and visually double the sense of space. We use safety-backed mirror as standard.
